Ecole Jeannine Manuel is a co-educational school for 3-18 year olds in Bedford Square, Fitzrovia, which opened in 2015 as a sister school to its well-known Paris namesake.  The school offers a bilingual education that aims to promote international understanding and foster critical thinking in its pupils.  It follows the French curriculum, apart from English, Mandarin and Science where the school has devised its own, and there are no external exams until Year 13 when pupils sit either the International Baccalaureate or the International Option of the French Baccalaureate. Freed from constant exam preparation, teachers are able to deliver exciting, creative lessons that encourage inquisitive and collaborative learning.  Naturally, there is a strong focus on languages and Mandarin is taught as a third language from Year 4.  Latin, Spanish and German are given as further options in Year 7 and 8.  The school is currently housed in 3 interconnected Georgian buildings and another site five minutes away in Russell Square is being developed for the senior years.  Facilities onsite are limited, as with most Central London schools, and there is no outside space; however pupils have their sports lessons at a variety of locations only a 5/10 minute walk away.  The intake of children is extremely international with almost 50 different nationalities making up the 440 strong pupil body.  Admission is based on 4 key criteria.  The school wants a diverse year group with a balance of native French and English speakers, it will only take children who will thrive and not be overly challenged by the curriculum and the child’s parents must be fully committing to the school’s pedagogic ethos.  As of yet there are no examination results, the first intake has only reached Year 11.  However, the Ecole Jeannine Manuel in Paris is ranked the number one lycee in France and has been for the last 7 years so its leadership has established success.
